Hello all!
First of all, I would like to thank everyone for a wonderful turnout at
the students' rights rally at which I announced my candidacy! I was
very pleased to see so many people! We got all of our voter
registration forms handed out - Jeff had to run to the registrar's
office and pick up another pack! I am extremely confident, that due to
some ideas that the Leadership Team has been working on, there will be
an enormous turnout at the polls from fraternities and sororities in
this upcoming election! To be perfectly honest, this turnout may very
well be enough to put us over the top in this election. When they were
gerrymandering the Commission districts so that students would have no
political power in this County, they forgot to split up the Super
Districts.
Secondly, please go to my website and visit the Campaign Blog! As many
of you know, I spoke at the last Mayor and Commission meeting - I was
sort of the "underdog", standing up for the fraternities in the middle
of a long line of people who insisted that the Commission "protect"
their neighborhoods from fraternities. (Protect them from what, the
$100,000 raised for community service projects? Ok.) Anyway, this drew
a fairly heated reaction from Commissioner David Lynn, which I also have
captured on video for your viewing pleasure. I was trying to keep
myself from laughing as he was berating me, because I did not want to
anger him anymore and have him come across the rail after me. In fact,
Jeff was coming to pick me up that night, and he and his mother were
watching the meeting on TV, and his mother said "Jeff, you had better
get down there quick, before David Lynn beats the [devil] out of Chuck!"
Fortunately I escaped the meeting without getting assaulted by Mr. Lynn,
and also with newfound credibility among the UGA students. After that
meeting, I had several Greek organizations contact me, who said they
were not interested in the campaign before, but after watching that
video (thank you David for sending it to everyone), they are very
interested. I guess they just needed someone to stand up for them, for
a change. Now that they see I am putting my money where my mouth is, I
am getting a flood of support! As I said, we are running the numbers,
and we do not want to get over confident, but if every Greek who lives
in District 9 votes in this election, I'd say we would be about 90% of
the way toward victory! This is all because of the dedicated support of
each and every one of you! Thank you! (Don't forget, staff meeting at
my house, Thursday at 9:30.)
Finally, before I sign off, I just wanted to welcome our newest member
of our listserv, Shaye Gambrell! Shaye is a bookkeeper and one of the
immaculately conceived residents of Cobbham neighborhood. Shaye is one
of those who feels that fraternities are horrible, wretched, abominable,
etc. Shaye has likely not been one of those less fortunate who have so
frequently been the recipients of Greeks' generosity in the community.
Instead, she judges them, will not tolerate one bit of noise or partying
from them, and instead demands that they and their generosity stay out
of her perfect idyllic "Harper Valley PTA" neighborhood. Shaye is
employed at a church in Athens that claims to "embrace tolerance as a
central principle." I guess tolerance of Greek society members does not
count? Please pick up a copy of the Athens Banner Herald today (Monday)
to read about some of the horrible things Shaye and the rest of her
tolerant friends have been doing to Greeks - including some who now
because of the tolerance of the Cobbham people can not even have a party
in their own basement.
See you Thursday!
